Abstract

During gestation, several intense and immunological, endocrine, metabolic and vascular alterations can promote important skin alterations in pregnant women, among them Melasma, characterized by irregular melanic pigmentation, preferably of the face, in women of childbearing age. The main objective of this research was to review melasma prevention methods, as well as address treatment options during pregnancy. This article was based on a bibliographic review based on BIREME and SCiELO and national (Google academic) sources from the last ten years, with the descriptors “melasma”, “pregnancy” and “prevention and treatment”. Numerous drugs have a proven teratogenic effect.

In dermatology, retinoids are drugs formally contraindicated for pregnant women. These seem to work throughout pregnancy, increasing the risk of hydrocephalus, microphthalmia and a host of other birth defects. The lack of adequate photoprotection behavior favors the onset of melasma during pregnancy. Simple measures can contribute to health and well-being by avoiding procedures and products that pose risks to both mother and fetus.
