Abstract
Every year in developed countries, approximately 100 million people suffer from healing related problems. This study aims to review in the literature the main theories of keloid scar formation, recommended treatments, elucidating the mechanisms of action in the healing process. Searching was conducted in the pubmed database on 03 different occasions. The keywords: “keloids and reviews”, “keloid and topical treatment” were searched in the last 10 years, “keloid scars and treatment” in the last 05 years. Works with animal model were excluded. Although pathological healing has several treatments described, most have a high rate of recurrence and failure due to its complex and not yet fully understood pathophysiology. The main treatments are listed in the article. The described treatments act on one or more elements involved in the healing process. Further studies on the mechanisms of interaction of the inflammatory cascade with the tissue are needed to enable the development of treatments with more efficiency and less adverse effects.
