Abstract
Isotretinoin is indicated for acne, where cases of exacerbation may occur due to increased colonization of bacteria. The antibiotic azithromycin is an alternative because it has anti-inflammatory properties. This article explores the use of azithromycin in the treatment of flare ups during isotretinoin use. It was used as a research source on the PubMed and Google Scholar platforms, to search for scientific journals, theses, dissertations and course completion papers, from 2012 to 2022 in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The use of isotretinoin stimulates the excess of sebum in the sebaceous glands and consequently the worsening of acne in the formation of flare ups, where the association of azithromycin during treatment with isotretinoin decreases the inflammatory condition that needs to be controlled to reduce the adverse effects. The present study found that the use of the antibiotic azithromycin can improve symptoms of exacerbation resulting from the use of the retinoid isotretinoin, which is a safe drug in the treatment of acne.
