Abstract
Acne is a prevalent skin disease that can have negative psychological effects on the patient, which has several treatments, especially abrasive agents and retinoids, such as isotretinoin, which has proven efficacy, but has adverse effects. The objective was to identify the recurrent and serious effects that can arise through the use of isotretinoin in the treatment of acne. The method consisted of a bibliographical, qualitative and quantitative review, in which the material is obtained through research made available by other scholars on the subject. The descriptors were: Acne; treatment; isotretinoin. In the results it was observed that acne is a common problem, with different levels of severity, and isotretinoin is the most efficient oral compound to reach the pathophysiological effects of the disease. However, retinoids are capable of affecting the muscles, bones, gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, eyes, ears, thyroid and kidneys. In the conclusions, the need for adequate medical follow-up for each case was identified, observing different factors that may change, in order to avoid serious problems or to take measures that minimize damage in cases of adverse effects.
