Abstract

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory disease that affects both sexes and all age groups, despite being more prevalent in children. The use of probiotics has been studied in the control of atopic dermatitis in children. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of using probiotics as a tool for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in children. METHODS: Narrative review of the literature performed according to the findings of the Medline database, considering the time interval between. Only articles available in English were selected. The keywords used were: “probiotics”; “atopic dermatitis” and “children”. RESULTS: According to the findings, probiotics act by suppressing the action of Th2 lymphocytes based on the stimulation of th1 lymphocytes, which, consequently, reduces the inflammatory response characteristic of this disease. Also, acting as immunomodulators, probiotics can help to reinforce the dermal barrier. CONCLUSION: Most of the studies found point to the use of probiotics as an intervention for atopic dermatitis as beneficial, however, due to the wide range of options, a consensus on the theme does not yet exist.
