Abstract

There are several treatment methods that can be used to prevent and control both hypertrophic scars and keloids. However, there are few studies that really show the main advantages of each therapy. The aim of the present study is to verify the main characteristics, both of hypertrophic scars and of keloids, emphasizing the consensus in the literature about treatment. A bibliographic search was carried out in 2020, using the search site “BVS - Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde” at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov., Using 20 articles that were considered relevant to the topic. There are several forms of treatment described in the literature, which can be used alone or in combination. The most common are surgical removal, cryotherapy, pressure, massage, intralesional injection of various agents, irradiation, use of silicone creams or gels and laser therapy. The therapeutic management of hypertrophic scars and keloids remains a challenge, with no consensus regarding the most appropriate therapeutic modality. Further studies are needed to arrive at the ideal form of treatment that optimizes the treatment of patients.
