Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis of unknown etiology that is associated with systemic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Its diagnosis is clinical and exclusion. There is no specific therapy or consensus on the most effective therapy for pyoderma gangrenosum.

OBJECTIVE

To report the case of a 66-year-old female patient with pyoderma gangrenosum associated with rheumatoid arthritis who underwent several treatments and faced diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties.

MATERIALS/SUBJECTS AND METHODS

The coexistence between pyoderma gangrenosum and rheumatoid arthritis and its diagnostic and treatment difficulty was observed in our dermatology outpatient clinic and a case report was carried out.

RESULTS

Association of rheumatoid arthritis and pyoderma gangrenosum helping in the diagnosis of the former, since it presents both diagnostic difficulty, due to the lack of specific laboratory tests and histopathological findings, and therapeutics because it does not have a specific therapeutic algorithm.

CONCLUSIONS

It is essential that physicians from all areas know how to recognize the clinical pattern of pyoderma gangrenosum and the possible diseases associated with it to help and accelerate its diagnosis. Early diagnosis accelerates the finding of the best therapy, which has a great impact on the quality of life of patients.

ABSTRACT

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis of unknown etiology that is associated with systemic diseases. Its diagnosis is clinical and exclusionary since it does not have specific exams or pathognomonic histopathological findings. We report the case of a patient with several lesions of pyoderma gangrenosum in association with rheumatoid arthritis, which helped in his diagnosis and in his struggle with the most appropriate therapy, since this patient does not have specific therapy or consensus on the most effective therapy for pyoderma gangrenosum.
