Abstract
Introduction. The proper balance between protein intake and protein breakdown is paramount for the balance of muscle function, so a negative balance can lead to muscle atrophy. For muscle hypertrophy and effective muscle remodeling, positive protein balance and physical exercise are essential. Objective: To report the case of an adult patient with a desire to recover muscle mass and discuss the importance of protein intake in association with resistance activities for a favorable muscle remodeling. Methodology: Male patient, 46 years old, complaining of weight gain and loss of muscle mass for 1 year. The patient was submitted to dietary readjustment and intensification of resistance exercises for 9 months. Results: Dietary readjustment and the practice of resistance exercises led to muscle hypertrophy and improved physical performance of the patient. There was muscle gain (especially in biceps) and a loss of 16kg in the period of 9 months. Conclusion: The increase in protein intake, with the inclusion of protein supplements, associated with resistance activity represent an effective strategy for the preservation of lean mass and a satisfactory muscle remodeling.
