Abstract
Introduction: Progressive macular hypomelanosis (PMH) is a dermatitis that causes discoloration, depigmentation of the skin, the contours of the macules that appear are irregular, without scaling and more commonly affect the trunk, uncommon in other regions. It occurs predominantly in young people and adults, mainly women, in a proportion of 3.1. General objective: to demonstrate how pityriasis versicolor was ruled out due to the similarity of symptoms. Specific objectives: Characterize hypomelanosis; Emphasize diagnostic methods; Point out similarities with other conditions. Methodology: This study consists of a literature survey based on national and international data. Studies published between 2017 and 2021 were considered eligible. Results: Ideally, in the presence of macules that fit the symptoms of PMH, Wood's light test is applied and a biopsy of the area is requested so that an accurate diagnosis can be reached and treatment can be started. Conclusion: As some approaches can be applied without success, the early initiation of treatment allows further attempts to be carried out until the condition is stabilized.
