Abstract

Beta-alanine, responsible for the synthesis of carnosine, plays several physiological roles during exercise, has attracted great interest in recent years with numerous investigations focused on increasing its intramuscular content to optimize its potential ergogenic benefits. The objective was to analyze the contribution and benefits of beta-alanine supplementation for hypertrophy. Integrative literature review of the last three years. Inclusion criteria: articles published in the last three years, available in full, in English and Portuguese; exclusion: editorials, letters to the editor, theses, dissertations, repeated articles that did not correspond to the theme. Beta-alanine supplementation for hypertrophy is still conflicting, however, the results allow to deduce a physiological role of muscle carnosine, especially during resistance training and may partly explain its ergogenic effects, so that beta-alenine supplementation, by increasing carnosine synthesis, can contribute to muscle hypertrophy. Beta-alanine supplementation can contribute to muscle hypertrophy by synthesizing carnosine in the muscle, however, case-control studies or randomized studies should be performed.
