Abstract

acne is a pathology of the pilosebaceous unit of the hair follicles in the skin. It is a highly prevalent condition that involves follicular hypercerantization, that is, obstruction of the sebaceous duct, generating greater production of sebum guided by androgens, increasing colonization by Propionibacterium acnes (Cutibacterium acnes) and inflammation. This work aims to address the update of therapeutic strategies for the treatment of acne vulgaris. For this purpose, a bibliographic search was carried out including articles and reviews with the theme “acne vulgaris” in the databases Pubmed, Medline, Scopus and Web of Science. The studies report a significant improvement in acne with the use of antibiotics, probiotics and prebiotics for regulation of the skin microbiome; chemical peeling techniques and the classic treatments with topical medications like benzoyl peroxide, among others. Acne is a high incidence pathology that can significantly impact patients psychologically. In its inflammatory form, it can also cause pain and discomfort. Therefore, it is important to diagnose and treat it early and effectively to minimize its long-term effects.
