Abstract
Obesity and depression figure a major public health problems worldwide, mainly due to their relationship with comorbidities that can worsen the condition. In this sense, bariatric surgery appears as one of the possible treatment for advanced cases of obesity. The aim of this study is to do a review of the scientific literature, published in the last 5 years, that quantifies and describes the effects on the evaluation of depressive symptoms, in the pre and postoperative period, in patients who underwent bariatric surgery. The search was performed using the terms “bariatric surgery” and “depression”, in the PubMed, LILACS, and SciELO databases. The searches included the results when the terms were present in the titles or summary of Works. After, the articles were evaluated according to inclusion criteria. 13 articles were included, all described an improvement in the general scores for assessing depressive symptoms in patients who underwent bariatric surgery, regardless of the type of procedure. According to the analysis, in all studies it was demonstrated that the bariatric surgery acts positively in reducing previous symptoms of depression in obese patients.
