Abstract
Melasma is a chronic condition that is difficult to treat. Cysteamine has recently been used as a therapeutic option.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of cysteamine and how it has been used in the treatment of melasma, according to references in the literature. This bibliographic review was carried out through searches in the literature, seeking scientific productions on topics associated with the topical treatment of melasma with cysteamine. In view of the findings, it is noted that the dermatological use of cysteamine is recent and relatively safe if well used, producing a good response. However, we still have few scientific studies showing its use in dermatology and with a large sample of patients.
From this review, it is concluded that the therapeutic response of cysteamine for the treatment of melasma is satisfactory, reducing the hyperpigmented lesions and with milder adverse effects, when compared to the use of hydroquinone.
